If you’re a visitor to Bangkok and Google “parks near me,” you’ll discover that most of the public parks in the city are centrally located. The BTS and MRT provide the quickest and easiest way to reach all the largest and most famous parks in Bangkok.
Parks are vital to the health and well-being of bustling city dwellers. They represent a place where people can escape and forget about their busy lives for a few hours, with lush greenery, serene ponds and lakes, and birds and wildlife.
We’ll tell you what makes these public parks worth visiting and what you can expect to find in them. We’ll start with the most centrally located park in the heart of Bangkok.
Lumpini Park
Lumpini Park is the oldest public park in Bangkok, and it’s located on Rama IV Road and Ratchadamri Road. The BTS Si Lom station is right across Rama IV Road from the park entrance. Being the oldest, the park is filled with beautiful mature shade trees and several lakes and ponds. The largest lake has whimsical duck and swan-shaped paddle boats that you can rent.
The park also has various community and youth centers and a library, making it popular with the local community. People can be found walking, jogging, and practicing Tai Chi on the park’s shaded pathways and lawns.
Chatuchak Park
Chatuchak Park is probably the second most well-known public park in Bangkok, partly due to its immensely popular weekend market. The market is a famed tourist attraction where shoppers can browse the stalls for hours and find inexpensive and unique wares of all kinds. The park itself is a beautiful tropical wonderland filled with mature palms and a winding lake crossed by several picturesque bridges. You can reach the park by taking the BTS to the Mo Chit Station or the MRT to the Chatuchak Park or Phajon Yothin Stations.
Queen Sirikit Park
Queen Sirikit Park is located right next to Chatuchak Park, just north of the Weekend Market. The park can also rightly be referred to as a botanical garden. It’s one of the newest parks in the city and was completed in 1992 to celebrate the 60th birthday of Queen Sirikut.
The park features beautiful landscaping and a vast range of biodiversity, including coconut, banana, and palm tree cultivars and a wide variety of hibiscus, lotus and waterlilies. The park also has hosts of colorful butterflies of many species. The closest rail transit station to the park is the BTS Mo Chit Station.
Wachirabenchathat Park (Rot Fai Park)
Commonly known as Rot Fai Park or Train Park, Wachirabenchathat Park is the third park grouped alongside Queen Sirikit and Chatuchak Parks. Rod Fai Park is known for its wide expanses of lawns ringed with mature shade trees and wide walkways. Bicycles can be rented and you’ll find the park is popular with groups and families of cyclists. The green expanses also make it a popular picnic spot.
The park’s namesakes are a few old abandoned train engines that offer a glimpse into train travel of yesteryear. Nowadays, the closest train service to the park is the MRT’s Phahon Yothin Station at the northeast corner of the park.
Benjakitti Park
Benjakitti Park was officially opened in 2004 in tribute to Queen Sirikut’s 72nd birthday. It has been used by the public since 1992 on land donated by the Tobacco Authority of Thailand. The highlight of the park is a vast lake running the length of the park. The massive area and the wide walkways make it a popular place with serious hikers and joggers. The park also has beautiful gardens with plants that flower at different times of the year, following the suggestion of Queen Sirikut.
Benjasiri Park
We’ll finish our tour of Bangkok’s parks with a look at Benjasiri Park on Sukhumvit Road next to Emporium shopping mall. It can be reached by simply taking the BTS Sukhumvit Line to Phrom Phong station. The compact but popular park offers manicured gardens, a lake, and grassy lawns, and serves as a getaway spot for many of the residents and workers in the towers ringing the park. The park also has a number of interesting statues and sculptures.
